Christmas Tree Flocking with Soap Flakes

Many years ago, when everyone had a box of soap flakes in their home, recipes for using soap flakes to make Christmas tree snow were quite common. Many of them can still be found by searching the internet.

Each year, people call us and ask whether Dri-Pak Soap Flakes are the same as Ivory Flakes, or as LUX Flakes, because they have a recipe for tree snow. We tell them, “sort of”.

The “soft of” difference is that Ivory and LUX were tallow (animal parts) based soaps and contained perfume. Dri-Pak Soap Flakes use a 100% vegetable based soap and have no perfume added.

Dri-Pak Soap Flakes apparently work in flocking recipes as some people buy from us every year. Sadly we do not have their sometimes “secret” recipes. Three known recipes follow.

The recipe you use is key

If you simply mix Soap Flakes and water and whip them into a peaked foam, over time, the water will evaporate and the foam will shrink quite a bit. So it is necessary to add something to the mix to keep the peaks firm throughout the season.

We have three recipes and assume these work, but it is best to experiment a little to make sure they’ll work for you. The recipes PDF may be downloaded from the link below.
